MI players wore black armbands during their IPL 2026 clash against SRH

This gesture follows the tragic and untimely passing of the daughter of one of the franchise’s support staff members

During their IPL 2026 match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on April 29, Mumbai Indians (MI) players were spotted donning black armbands as a mark of respect. This gesture follows the tragic and untimely passing of the daughter of one of the franchise’s support staff members.

Why MI players don black armbands at Wankhede?

The franchise confirmed the decision through a brief communication prior to the start of the match, stating that the players would wear the armbands 'in remembrance and solidarity with the family." Out of respect for the privacy of those involved, Mumbai Indians did not release any further details regarding the specific support staff member or the family.

“Due to the untimely demise of our support staff’s daughter, Mumbai Indians players will wear black arm bands today, in remembrance and solidarity with the family,” MI's statement read.

The tribute is taking place during a critical league-stage fixture against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), a match that carries big weight for both franchises in the middle portion of the IPL 2026 season. MI head into the contest aiming to establish greater consistency following a mixed campaign under captain Hardik Pandya, while the Sunrisers are simultaneously battling to secure crucial points in a tightly contested tournament table.

MI's inconsistent show in IPL 2026

MI have experienced a fluctuating trajectory over recent seasons. After a disappointing last-place finish in IPL 2024, the team demonstrated notable improvement by reaching the playoffs in 2025. Despite this recovery, the franchise is still striving to recapture the sustained dominance that characterized their previous championship-winning eras. The current 2026 campaign has further focused attention on the team's squad balance, strategic leadership decisions, and their capacity to execute effectively in high-pressure moments.

This fixture holds added importance due to the competitive nature of the current points table. With many teams separated by thin margins in net run rate, every outcome during the second half of the league phase could prove decisive in the race for the playoffs. As five-time champions, Mumbai Indians face mounting pressure to keep pace with the top four, while SRH are equally determined to put on a show and remain in contention following their own period of inconsistent form.
