One question keeps lingering on every Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) fan as to when they will get to see their icon MS Dhoni in action in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. Mumbai Indians (MI) and CSK are set to face off on April 23, with the high-stakes encounter taking place at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. While fans are eager for the 'El Clasico' of IPL, the primary point of speculation remains the availability of legendary wicketkeeper-batter, who has been sidelined since the beginning of the tournament with a calf injury.

Maybe next game, maybe after that: Ruturaj Gaikwad on MS Dhoni's availability
Addressing the suspense surrounding the veteran's return, CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad provided a crucial update during a promotional event on the eve of the match. Gaikwad confirmed that Dhoni is making steady progress in his recovery and is expected to return to the field in the near future. He also clarified that the injury was sustained during an intra-squad practice match, which unfortunately kept the former skipper out of action for the start of the season.
"We were playing a practice match; that's when he [MS Dhoni] snapped his calf, and then he wasn't able to run as comfortably as he wanted to. And I think after that it was just about him seeing some of the youngsters playing in practice games or in match simulations where he felt confident enough about them, who are ready and who have that ability to play in the IPL. And, after that, it was just about taking time on his recovery, and slowly, slowly he's getting there. Never know, maybe next game, maybe after that, but definitely one day for sure," Gaikwad said at an event.

Gaikwad also clarified the tactical plan for Dhoni’s return, noting that the veteran will only come out to bat when absolutely necessary. Much like his approach over the past few IPL seasons, the intention is to utilise him strictly as a specialist finisher in the final stages of the innings. Consequently, fans should expect to see Dhoni slotting in around the number eight position, focusing on delivering quick, impactful cameos. His primary objective will be to clobber the ball during the death overs, maintaining the strategic, high-impact role that has defined his recent appearances for the Yellow Army.
"About batting order, I think he has made it pretty clear for the last 2-3 years. I think it is just about giving an opportunity to youngsters or to other players to bat higher up the order and take the honours on him, whatever is possible, whatever he can do. n the last overs if required and obviously if situation requires it, he will go up the order but he likes to take everything on his chin and do the damage in last three four overs, whatever is possible," Gaikwad concluded.
