However, Suresh Raina feels Dhoni will play the match between CSK vs MI

The anticipation at Chepauk has reached a fever pitch as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) icon MS Dhoni appears poised to make his long-awaited season debut. The 44-year-old veteran has been sidelined for the entirety of the IPL 2026 campaign so far due to a persistent calf injury. His absence from the starting eleven has fueled intense speculation and debate regarding his fitness and role within the team, leaving fans wondering when—or if—the legendary captain would return to the field.

MS Dhoni to feature in CSK vs MI clash?

However, the uncertainty seems to have been cleared just hours before the high-stakes "El Clasico" of the IPL. Former CSK star and close confidant Suresh Raina revealed that Dhoni is finally set to take the field against arch-rivals Mumbai Indians this Saturday. If he features in the playing XI, it will mark a significant emotional and tactical boost for the Super Kings as they prepare to face the five-time champions in one of the most prestigious fixtures on the cricket calendar.

"Aaj khel rahe hai shayad. Aaj khel rahe hai. Khel rahe hai bhai logo (He will play tonight)," said Raina on JioStar.

MS Dhoni's injury update

In a glimpse behind the scenes of the CSK camp, batting coach Michael Hussey shared that Dhoni’s recent absence from the dugout was a calculated move. Hussey explained that the former captain intentionally stayed away from matchday environments to keep the spotlight on the active players, choosing a low profile specifically to ensure he didn't become a distraction to the team's focus.

Regarding his physical condition, Hussey offered an encouraging update, noting that Dhoni is technically ready to contribute with both the bat and the wicketkeeping gloves. The primary obstacle remains his agility between the wickets; while his power and reflexes are intact, his running fitness is the final hurdle he needs to clear before he is deemed fully match-ready.

While the franchise has yet to release an official statement, the mere prospect of a comeback—whether against MI tonight or in the May 5 clash with Delhi Capitals, has sent a wave of adrenaline through the fanbase. His return at this juncture would not only provide a massive emotional lift but could also offer the tactical stability CSK needs as the season enters its most critical phase.

"Hopefully he'll be back as soon as possible. I don't know if it's tomorrow or it's maybe the next match after that, but he's progressing really well. I know he's been upping his running speeds and that was probably the sticking point. I think we're very confident from a skill perspective with his batting and his wicketkeeping. But it was just making sure that he could maintain good running power, particularly towards the back end of an inning where he's going to have to scan for those ones and twos. So as soon as he's got the confidence in his calf, then I'm sure he'll give it the tick to ready to go," Hussey said at the pre-match press conference.

“He’s such a team-oriented guy. He always wants what’s best for the team and felt that if he came to the ground, the focus would shift towards him. The cameras would be on him, the crowd would react loudly, and it could take attention away from the players. He wanted the team to go about their job without that added pressure,” he added.
