KKR will take on DC in their must-win IPL 2026 clash

Meanwhile, KKR head coach Abhishek Nayar said that KKR won't change their approach for the high-stakes clash

Kolkata Knight Riders head coach Abhishek Nayar has insisted that his side will not alter their aggressive approach, even as they enter the final weekend of IPL 2026 needing external results to fall into place for a playoff berth. With KKR’s campaign suddenly revived following a remarkable turnaround, Nayar emphasised that the franchise remains strictly focused on playing the best cricket possible, rather than getting bogged down by complex playoff equations.

KKR’s final league clash against the Delhi Capitals at Eden Gardens has effectively turned into a knockout match for the defending champions. A victory on home turf would push Kolkata to 15 points and keep their postseason hopes alive, whereas a defeat or a washout would result in immediate elimination.

It does not matter whether it is a dead rubber or not: KKR head coach Abhishek Nayar

Speaking at the pre-match press conference ahead of the must-win encounter, Nayar stressed that the team’s core mentality will remain completely unchanged. He reiterated that the players will not let the mounting pressure of the playoff race disrupt the strategic style of cricket that brought them back into contention.

“There is always value. Imagine a player scoring a hundred tomorrow. Every game of cricket has value. Everything matters, every number, every victory. You have to understand that everyone who buys a ticket and comes to watch the game tomorrow is coming to watch Kolkata Knight Riders. Every win brings happiness to the city, and the players understand that very well," Nayar said at the pre-match press conference.

“Our fans care deeply about the franchise. So, it does not matter whether it is a dead rubber or not. The mindset will remain the same, to play the best cricket we can. Every individual in the team is not only representing the franchise but also representing himself. Everyone wants to leave an impression. The attitude will remain unchanged, regardless of the result,” he added.

Our approach has remained very consistent and we want to continue with that: Nayar

Nayar also firmly dismissed any notion of taking the Delhi Capitals lightly, despite their slim mathematical chances of qualifying for the playoffs. He maintained that there are no weak links in the tournament, insisting that every single franchise in the IPL possesses a dangerous lineup capable of turning any game around.

“Any opponent in the IPL is a strong opponent. All teams are beautifully balanced. They have the best players in the world, the best Indian players, and young cricketers eager to make a name for themselves. So, there is no team in this format, especially in the IPL, that you can say is not strong. Every team is dangerous. Every team wants to perform at the highest level,” he continued.

“As I said, our approach has remained very consistent and we want to continue with that. We assess the opposition and try to understand them, but eventually, on the day, the team that plays better cricket usually wins,” Nayar concluded.

The sudden revival of KKR has established itself as one of the most compelling storylines in the second half of the IPL 2026 season. The franchise endured a dismal start to their campaign, managing to scrape together just a single point from their opening six fixtures, which seemingly buried their hopes early on. However, Kolkata pulled off a remarkable turnaround by completely flipping their season on its head, storming back with six victories in their last seven matches. Highlighted by a dramatic, high-stakes win over the Mumbai Indians, this late-season surge has catapulted KKR back into playoff contention, leaving them with 13 points from 13 matches heading into their final league game.
