LSG will now start their hunt for new captain for the upcoming IPL season

Following a dismal tenure at the helm of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), Rishabh Pant has officially stepped down as captain. The wicketkeeper-batsman made the difficult decision after leading the franchise to a seventh-place finish in 2025 and a rock-bottom tenth-place finish in 2026, securing a total of just 10 victories across both seasons. Throughout the latest campaign, the immense pressure of leadership was visibly taking its toll on Pant.

His increasingly strained demeanor was evident both on and off the field, characterised by erratic pre- and post-match statements and an incident where he swore live on air, portraying the image of a broken man. As his batting form deserted him and the losses mounted, the pressure became unsustainable until he finally chose to walk away. Ultimately, this separation might be exactly what both parties need, allowing Pant to clear his mind and refocus solely on his batting, while the franchise gets the opportunity to start afresh.

Moving forward, Lucknow faces the daunting task of finding a suitable replacement before the IPL 2027 season begins. Fortunately, the management will not have to look too far, as they already possess three straightforward leadership options within their current squad: Nicholas Pooran, Aiden Markram, and Mitchell Marsh.

Nicholas Pooran's case

Each candidate brings a compelling argument to the table, starting with Nicholas Pooran. The West Indian boasts extensive captaincy experience across the global franchise circuit, currently leading the Trinbago Knight Riders in the CPL, MI New York in MLC, and MI Emirates in the ILT20. Furthermore, Pooran is already familiar with the LSG leadership environment, having stepped in as interim captain during the 2024 season when KL Rahul was relegated to an Impact Sub role due to injury. However, his recent form remains a major red flag, as he endured a dismal IPL 2026 campaign, managing just 234 runs at a disappointing average of 18 and a sluggish strike rate of 127.86.

Aiden Markram's case

Aiden Markram presents another heavily credentialed alternative. The South African batting all-rounder captains his national team in T20Is and leads Durban's Super Giants in the SA20, alongside a highly successful stint guiding Sunrisers Eastern Cape to consecutive titles in 2022 and 2023. While he does have IPL captaincy experience with Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2023, that particular stint yielded little success. Similar to Pooran, Markram’s guaranteed spot in the LSG playing XI is under immense scrutiny; he was displaced from his opening slot by Josh Inglis and has struggled heavily to find his rhythm in the Lucknow middle order.

Mitchell Marsh's case

Consequently, Mitchell Marsh emerges as the final, and perhaps most viable, option for the franchise. The Australian all-rounder was undisputed as LSG's standout batter during the IPL 2026 season, hammering 563 runs at an impressive average of 43.30 and an explosive strike rate of 163.18. While he has yet to captain a side in the IPL, Marsh possesses top-tier international leadership credentials, having served as Australia’s permanent T20I captain since 2024 and stepping in to lead the ODI side in Pat Cummins' absence. Crucially, given the form slumps of both Markram and Pooran, Marsh is currently the only overseas player with a locked-in spot in the starting lineup, making him the logical choice to take the reins.
