CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad speaks at an event; CSK's Jamie Overton and MI's Tilak Varma during a heated exchange.

Story Highlights:

Jamie Overton had a heated altercation with Tilak Varma last month.

Ruturaj Gaikwad revealed his words fuelled Overton's anger.

The El Clasico of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has been in favour of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) of late. On April 23, when CSK hosted Mumbai Indians (MI), tempers flared. CSK's English pace-bowling all-rounder Jamie Overton had a heated exchange with MI's Tilak Varma. The incident did not escalate as Suryakumar Yadav and umpires intervened quickly to douse the flames. While, the two players shared a huge after the match, a CSK fan was intrigued what happened between them. At an event, Overton was asked about the conversation by a young fan. Overton blamed CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad for the incident.

“No, no, no. Maybe you should ask Rutu because he was the one causing it. On the previous ball...” said Overton.

"Tilak hit him for four, so I told him, ‘You are bowling very badly. You shouldn’t be here, you should go home.’ That made him angry, and he said a few good words to Tilak, and then they started fighting. As he is from England, he says a lot of good words," said Gaikwad with a smile on his face.

It is not certain whether Gaikwad told Overton exactly that considering he was talking to a young kid.

Overton outperforms Tilak in El Clasico clashes

Overton had the last laugh as Varma was dismissed for a 29-ball 37 in the run chase. The English pace-bowling all-rounder took Krish Bhagat's wicket in two overs he bowled. MI were bowled out for 109 and lost by 103 runs.

The two teams met on May 2 as well. This time Overton's short delivery broke Varma's fitness band and he quickly checked up on him. Once again, he was economical, conceding 23 runs from four overs and taking the wicket of Naman Dhir. On the other hand, Varma couldn't get going and departed for a single-digit score.

Overton finds form

Not so potent with the bat, Overton has 10 wickets from eight games this season at an average of 20.80, including a four-wicket haul against Delhi Capitals (DC). With the bat, he has scored 136 runs from six innings at an average of 34 and strike rate of 158.13.

Overton will be seen in action again as CSK go up against DC on May 5 at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi.
