Ireland tour of England ODI Series 2023

In the aftermath of his remarkable recovery from a severe car crash, former England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff has received a strong endorsement for a potential coaching role. Ben Stokes, an integral part of the England cricket team, has expressed that Flintoff, after making his comeback during the ODI series against New Zealand in September 2023, has the makings of a full-time coach. Flintoff's return to the cricketing limelight came when he joined England's backroom staff during the ODI series. This marked his first association with the team since he met with a tragic accident while filming for the popular BBC show, Top Gear. The incident took place at the Top Gear Test Track in Surrey in December 2022, leading to serious injuries for the charismatic cricketer. Following the incident, BBC Studios extended a heartfelt apology and promised full support for Flintoff's recovery process. Although Flintoff's exact responsibilities within the backroom staff remained unspecified, he played a pivotal role in offering invaluable insights from his vast cricketing journey. This unique arrangement provided an excellent opportunity for the current crop of players to tap into Flintoff's vast reservoir of knowledge and expertise. Even without a defined role, Flintoff seamlessly integrated into the team setup. In an interview with the Telegraph, Stokes, who made a significant impact in the series with his stellar batting performance, was vocal about Flintoff's potential in coaching. "After his cricket career, Freddie's personality was perfect for TV,' said Stokes. 'But then you see him make a comeback, and you can picture him being involved as a full-time coach." Under Flintoff's guidance and Stokes' brilliance with the bat, England clinched the ODI series against New Zealand with a convincing 3-1 margin. Stokes, who registered a mammoth 182 in the third ODI – the highest individual score by an England batter – acknowledged Flintoff's palpable excitement and admiration for the team's outstanding performance. Drawing attention to Flintoff's evolving confidence and passion, Stokes added, "He loved every minute of it. He said that he was in awe of what he was witnessing. Every day he spent with us, he grew more confident within himself." In the backdrop of such accolades, the cricketing community is keenly watching Flintoff's next steps, speculating a more prominent and lasting role for him in England's cricketing framework. MORE ON SPORTS TAK:Watch: Flag-bearers Lovlina Borgohain in saree, Harmanpreet Singh in Kurta lead India's charge at Asian Games 2023's opening ceremonyWatch: Ish Sodhi gets run out at non-striker’s end, then hugs Bangladesh bowler after Litton Das calls him back

Ben Stokes believes that Andrew Flintoff has the potential to be a full-time coach, especially after latter's involvement with England's support team during the ODI series against New Zealand.

In a recent update from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on September 21, England's mainstay, Joe Root, has been given a break for the concluding two ODIs against Ireland. Tom Kohler-Cadmore has been brought into the squad to fill in for Root. The move comes as Root gears up for the imminent World Cup. His recent form raised eyebrows when he could only manage modest scores in the previous ODI series against New Zealand, with a top score of a mere 29 runs.Although his form had been patchy, Root had initially included himself for the opening ODI versus Ireland. Regrettably, fans couldn’t witness any action, as the match at Headingley on September 20 was called off due to persistent rain. The ECB’s official statement confirmed Root's absence for the subsequent matches and introduced Kohler-Cadmore as his substitute. Cricket enthusiasts now await the next face-off in the series, scheduled to be held at Trent Bridge this Saturday."In preparation for the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup in India starting next month, Yorkshire and England Men's batter Joe Root is to be rested for the remaining matches in the Metro Bank ODI series against Ireland.""In light of this, the National Selectors have added Somerset batter Tom Kohler-Cadmore to bolster the England ODI squad.""Kohler-Cadmore is set to join the team in Nottingham following the conclusion of Somerset's LV= Insurance County Championship Division One match against Kent at Taunton, which is scheduled to finish on Friday," read the statement.England squad for remaining matches vs Ireland: Zak Crawley (c), Ben Duckett (vc), Rehan Ahmed, Tom Kohler-Cadmore, Brydon Carse, Sam Hain, Will Jacks, Craig Overton, Matthew Potts, Phil Salt, George Scrimshaw, Jamie Smith, Luke Wood. MORE ON SPORTS TAKAsian Games 2023: Harmanpreet Singh and Lovlina Borgohain will be India's flag-bearers in the opening ceremony 'I don't regret anything': Harmanpreet Kaur defends herself over massive outburst during Bangladesh tour

Joe Root to skip last two ODIs against Ireland; Tom Kohler-Cadmore announced replacement

There is not a single World Cup-bound player in the ongoing ODI series between England and Ireland but the spirit of 'Bazball' is truly alive in them. Traditionally opening batters are expected to be cautious against the new ball in overcast conditions. But Philip Salt was not in a mood to wait around. Taking on Mark Adair, he scored a hat-trick of fours followed by a six. A total of 19 runs were scored in the first over, the joint-most in the history of ODI cricket. 19 runs in the first over of an ODI have only been scored once in the history of the format. Former South Africa skipper Graeme Smith scored 19 runs off England pacer James Anderson in 2003.

4️⃣4️⃣4️⃣6️⃣ Phil Salt's not hanging around, hitting 18 off the first four balls!#ENGvIRE #EnglandCricket pic.twitter.com/H1X5hOeEsj— England Cricket (@englandcricket) September 26, 2023

On the first ball of the innings, Salt got some width and he hit it over the point fielder for a boundary. Next ball, he guided the ball through the off-side along the ground for another boundary. On the third delivery, he got one on his body. Salt swivelled and pulled it away for a boundary on the leg side. Next ball, he smashed a similar delivery over the leg side for a maximum. It was followed by a wide down the leg side. On the next two balls, he could not find the gap and no runs were scored. The onslaught continued and Salt hit Adiar for a six and a four in his next over. Will Jacks joined the party as well. He smashed left-arm pacer Joshua Little for two consecutive sixes. With a single via leg byes, another record was created. England completed 50 runs from just 21 balls, their fastest team fifty in ODI cricket. In the sixth over, Salt hit Little for a six to complete his half-century from just 22 balls. This is the fifth-fastest half-century for England in ODIs. He departed for a 28-ball 61 in the seventh over. Salt and Jacks shared a blinding 87-run opening partnership from just 42 balls. In the eighth over, Zak Crawley picked up a couple of runs from the last ball. England got to the 100-run mark from just 48 balls. It is England's fastest team century in ODIs. MORE ON SPORTS TAK:'Players are sick, unavailable, some have gone home for personal reasons': Rohit Sharma admits uncertainties ahead of 3rd ODI vs AustraliaSri Lanka announce their ODI World Cup squad, frontline pacers return but star all-rounder ruled out

Phil Salt played a few exquisite shots but became Craig Young's first victim of the day in the seventh over. Then skipper Zak Crawley was trapped in front of the wickets for a silver duck in the same over. Ben Duckett shared a 102-run partnership for the third wicket with Jacks.
