In the aftermath of early exit from T20 World Cup 2026, Cricket Australia (CA) has made changes to their T20I squad. Senior all-rounders Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis alongwith former captain Steve Smith have been dropped. Maxwell and Stoinis were not at their best in the mega event whereas Smith was called in as a backup and did not get a single game.
Aaron Hardie has been recalled to the side after his all-round show in Peshawar Zalmi’s Pakistan Super League (PSL) title-winning campaign. Smith and Maxwell regained form in their maiden PSL stints but couldn’t impress the selections. Similarly, Stoinis did not find a place despite a few good knocks for Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. In addition, left-arm pacer Ben Dwarshuis has lost his place in T20Is too. Dwarshuis is yet to make his IPL debut for PBKS.
Australia will be without the services of their senior pace duo Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood who have been rested for Pakistan and Bangladesh white-ball tour. In their absence, Riley Meredith has returned to the squad. Also, fit-again left-arm pacer Spencer Johnson, who is yet to play a game for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) this season, has been recalled. Wicketkeeper-batter Josh Philippe has been recalled as well after missing a spot in T20 World Cup 2026 squad.
22-year-old to make T20I debut
Australia have also bolstered their spin-bowling lineup with Joel Davies. The 22-year-old left-arm spinner has received his maiden call-up. Davies is a bowling all-rounder who had a breakthrough Big Bash League (BBL) season with Sydney Sixers. From 13 games, he claimed 14 wickets at an average of 13.35 and conceded runs at an economy rate of 6.23 runs per over. With the bat, he scored 137 runs from eight innings at an average of 27.40 and strike rate of 159.30.
