A massive uproar has engulfed the cricketing world following a heated on-field confrontation during the Tri-Nation series, where 15-year-old prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was involved in a physical altercation and shoved Sri Lankan cricketer Vishen Halambage. The flashpoint erupted after Halambage reportedly targeted the teenager with relentless sledging regarding his IPL 2026 exploits, intentionally provoking the youngster until emotions boiled over. To compound a frustrating day where India A ultimately fell short in a tense Super Over, Sooryavanshi quickly found himself at the center of intense moral policing across social media platforms for his aggressive outburst.
Will Vaibhav Sooryavanshi be punished after fight with Sri Lanka A player? BCCI answers
The hot-headed reaction immediately sparked intense speculation that the BCCI would crack down on the young batsman with heavy disciplinary action. However, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia firmly dismissed these rumors, clarifying that the Indian cricket board has no intention of overstepping its bounds. Saikia emphasized that the BCCI cannot usurp the match referee's authority, noting that any official sanctions or disciplinary measures rest entirely within the jurisdiction of the ICC match officials on the ground.
“A lot of things are going on in social media that BCCI is contemplating action, etc. Do you want BCCI to step into the domain of match referee? Whatever had happened, it was a part of the game, and the BCCI had no role to play. The role is that of the match referee. If anything is going wrong, he will take a call, the umpires will take a call, and there is a system in place," Saikia told PTI.
What triggered Sooryavanshi's animated reaction?
With the match hanging by a thread during a high-stakes Super Over in Dambulla, Sooryavanshi was sent out to anchor India A's pursuit of a daunting 14 runs from the final three deliveries. Tasked with an incredibly difficult finish the moment he took strike, the 15-year-old was unable to pull off the miracle, managing a double and a boundary before missing out on the final ball. As a disappointed Sooryavanshi began his long walk back to the pavilion, the ecstatic Sri Lankan players erupted into boisterous celebrations, turning up the volume on their sledging and banter to rub salt into the wound.

Because the developmental tour falls outside the direct jurisdiction of ICC, responsibility for managing the fallout rests entirely with the host board, allowing the SLC to handle the investigation through its own independent framework. On the other side of the ledger, the BCCI has opted against taking any retaliatory or disciplinary action against their young starlet.
