England's returning captain Ben Stokes is sorry for the infamous nightclub incident

However, Stokes has come clean after a thorough investigation and will return as England captain in the third Test

Ben Stokes has issued an apology to his England team-mates as he prepares to reclaim the captaincy for the third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge. The leadership change comes on the heels of a bruising 253-run defeat for England in the second Test, a match Stokes missed due to off-field disciplinary issues.

Ben Stokes sorry for nightclub incident

Both Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson were sidelined for the previous match while officials investigated a breach of the team's midnight curfew, which involved an incident at a London nightclub after England’s victory in the series opener. Following an investigation, the Cricket Regulator cleared both players of any "violent conduct," clearing the path for their immediate recall to the starting XI for Thursday's crucial match.

Despite avoiding the most serious charges, a disciplinary hearing by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) concluded that the duo had "breached contractual obligations." Consequently, both players received formal written warnings. In Stokes' absence, Joe Root stepped up to captain a heavily depleted side, which saw debutants Sonny Baker, Jordan Cox, and James Rew thrust into the spotlight under complicated circumstances.

Reflecting on his decision to address the team, Stokes stated that taking accountability of the whole situation and apologising was his first priority upon returning. He acknowledged that the fallout extended far beyond himself, admitting that the controversy unfairly overshadowed what should have been a proud and unforgettable milestone for the young debutants.

Stokes stressed that true leadership requires facing adversity head-on rather than just enjoying the good times. He noted that it would have been naive to ignore the disruption he caused, stating that being a leader meant being "man enough" to look his teammates in the eye, take total responsibility for his actions, and offer a sincere apology.

"That was one of the first things I had to do as a captain," Stokes said at the pre-match press conference after being quizzed about the incident.

ECB makes key changes in England's playing XI for series-decider

Meanwhile, England have announced their playing XI for the series-deciding clash against New Zealand, which kicks off on June 25 at Trent Bridge. In the wake of a heavy defeat at The Oval, the team management has opted for a major shake-up, making numerous personnel changes beyond the high-profile returns of Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson.

As part of the roster reshuffle, recent debutants James Rew and Sonny Baker have been omitted from the side. Joining them on the sidelines is Henry Crocombe, who had previously been brought into the setup as injury cover for pace bowler Ollie Robinson. The lineup will also get a big boost with the return of Jamie Smith. After missing the second Test to be with his family on paternity leave, the wicketkeeper-batsman is set to reclaim his spot in the starting XI and take over the gloves behind the stumps.
