South Africa's uncapped pace-bowling all-rounder Beyers Swanepoel has found himself in hot waters after he left the CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge Division One 2026 final after completing his quota of 10 overs. While Swanepoel took the flight to England to join County side Worcestershire, his No-Objection Certificate (NOC) might be cancelled as it was unsigned by Lions who had no knowledge of his departure mid-game.
The 27-year-old was lethal with the ball, taking three wickets for 44 runs in his quota of 10 overs against Titans. He walked off the field after 42nd over of the innings.
Swanepoel leaves team in time of need
At first, Lions were allowed a substitute fielder as they thought that Swanepoel suffered a niggle. However, the Titans inquired enquired about his absence from the ground after which it was ascertained that Swanepoel had said goodbye to a few teammates before heading to Johannesburg airport for a 7:30 PM flight. When the match officials were informed about him leaving the field uninjured, the substitute fielder was taken off. Lions had 10 players on the field for the rest of the game. They eventually lost the match on the penultimate delivery by three wickets with Duan Jansen and Roelof van der Merwe in the middle.
Decision in 48 hours
"We are investigating the matter and following protocol as per NOC regulation. We will advise everyone accordingly on the way forward once the investigation is concluded within 48 hours," Eddie Khoza, CSA executive, domestic cricket, told ESPNcricinfo.
Swanepoel is set to play for Worcestershire in their opening match against Derbyshire on April 3. A final call on his NOC will be taken before the game.
Meanwhile, South African Cricketers' Association and CSA are in touch on how to deal with the situation. The Lions are not pleased and are considering terminating the 27-year-old's contract.
Lions' chief executive, Jono Leaf-Wright isn't happy with Swanepoel not having a clear communication with the team beforehand.
"I am extremely disappointed in Beyers. His actions go completely against the culture and values of the team which we have worked to build for the last six years. He has let the union and the fans down,” Leaf-Wright said.
Worcestershire club is not jumping to conclusions before taking a call. They are waiting for the whole story to come out.
"We are in the process of establishing the full facts and, while that is ongoing, it would be inappropriate to comment further," the club said in a statement.
