Chennai Super Kings' newly signed Matthew Short ran riot in the Big Bash League (BBL) on December 27 during a high-stakes clash between the Adelaide Strikers and Brisbane Heat. Despite his remarkable individual efforts, the Strikers were unable to clinch the win, falling just seven runs short in a nail-biting finish.
Matthew Short lights up BBL with blistering 39-ball 63 for Adelaide Strikers
Having been secured by CSK for his base price of Rs 1.50 crore in the 2025 IPL auction, Short is rapidly proving to be one of the most exciting prospects for the upcoming season. While his previous IPL stint with the Punjab Kings in 2023 was relatively modest—totaling 119 runs across six matches—his current form in the BBL suggests he is ready to play a much more significant role under the leadership of the Chennai franchise.

During the chase against Brisbane Heat, Short took command of the innings with an explosive display of power hitting. Chasing a target of 180, he reached a half-century in just 28 deliveries and eventually finished with a blistering 63 off 39 balls, a knock fueled by five boundaries and two sixes. His aggression kept the Strikers in the hunt, though the team was ultimately bowled out for 172 in the final over.
Matthew Short's heroics go in vain
Short’s impact wasn't limited to his batting; he also excelled with the ball, providing crucial breakthroughs for the Strikers. He claimed two vital wickets while conceding only 13 runs in his three-over spell, dismissing Matt Renshaw and Hugh Weibgen to stall the Heat’s momentum. Although his all-round heroics weren't enough to secure a victory, his performance has undoubtedly sent a strong message to the CSK management ahead of the IPL.

His ability to provide explosive starts and chip in with crucial wickets makes him an ideal fit for the tactical demands of MS Dhoni’s side.
