Following Jay Shah's appointment as the youngest-ever Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), the position of Secretary in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) became vacant. However, Devajit Saikia has been appointed as the acting secretary of BCCI after Jay Shah took over the reins of ICC Chairman.

BCCI appoints Devajit Saikia as acting secretary

The development was confirmed by BCCI president Roger Binny. In a letter accessed by Sports Tak , former India cricketer Roger Binny wrote:

"Hope this email finds you well. As you are aware, Hon Secretary, Mr. Jay Shah has been elected as the Chairperson of the ICC with effect from December 1, 2024. While it is indeed a proud moment for the BCCI, his election to the ICC has left the post of Hon. Secretary vacant.

 

"In accordance with the BCCI Rules and Regulations, Rule 7 (1) (d):

"The President shall, in the event of a vacancy or indisposition of an Office Bearer, delegate the functions to another Office Bearer until the vacancy is duly filled up, or the indisposition ceases".

Accordingly, I hereby delegate the functions of the Secretary to you till the post is duly filled up as per the processes laid down as per the BCCI Rules and Regulations.

Who is Devajit Saikia?

Devajit Saikia is an Indian advocate, a former first class cricketer and a cricket administrator. Saikia was already the joint secretary of BCCI but after Jay Shah's departure from the big post he has been handed full responsibility of the post. Notably, he represented Assam in four first-class matches in which he scored 54 runs

Recently, the Advocate General Devajit Saikia was appointed to the prestigious role of Board Director of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Representing the BCCI, Saikia formally took charge of his new position at the ICC headquarters in Dubai.
 

Taking to social media, Saikia expressed his gratitude for the support he received from key figures, including Jay Shah, the current ICC Chairman.

“Assumed charge as Board Director, International Cricket Council, representing BCCI yesterday in Dubai... deeply grateful to Jay (Bhai) Shah for his immense support & encouragement... humbled & privileged,” he wrote.

 

 

With his extensive administrative experience, including his role as the General Secretary of the Assam Cricket Association, Saikia's appointment to the ICC Board reflects his dedication to cricket and sports administration.
