Bangladesh pacer Hasan Mahmud scripted history on Day 1 of the first Test against Australia at Marrara Cricket Ground, Darwin. Mahmud broke former Australia pacer Jason Gillespie's record for best bowling figures by a pacer in the Tests between Australia and Bangladesh.
Gillespie had taken four wickets for 38 runs against Bangladesh in 2003. For Bangladesh, the record belonged to left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman with four wickets for 84 runs in Chattogram in 2017.

Overall, Mahmud is the third bowler to take a fifer in Australia-Bangladesh Test history. The best bowling figures record belongs to Australia's Stuart MacGill who bagged eight wickets for 108 runs in Fatullah in 2006. Australia's off-spinner Nathan Lyon has a seven-fer and two six-fers against Bangladesh. All of them came on Australia's tour of Bangladesh in 2017.

Mahmud's maiden Test wicket on Australian soil was Jake Weaterald who got an outside edge to wicketkeeper Litton Das. In his seventh over of the new-ball spell, he knocked over Travis Head. In his third spell, Mahmud bowled a short of the length delivery to skipper Pat Cummins who went for a slash and got out caught behind. In his next over, he got an outside edge off Mitchell Starc's bat.
Mahmud completed his fifer early into the third session. Steve Smith went for an upper cut but the ball ballooned up in the air with Das taking a simple catch. Smith departed for 71 off 109 balls. He completed his third Test fifer from 15 appearances. He took 16 overs to register the unique feat by a Bangladeshi bowler in Australia.
The 26-year-old ended up taking the wicket of Lyon as well. He took six wickets for 55 runs, his Test career best bowling figures. Australia were bowled out for 198, their lowest Test score against Bangladesh.
