India's young batters scored 428 runs on Day 2 as they took a substantial lead over Will Malajczuk-led Australia Under-19. After Vaibhav Suryavanshi's blitzkrieg 86-ball 113, Vedant Trivedi batted patiently and scored 140. The Ayush Mhatre-led side took a huge 185-run lead in the first of the two Youth Tests.
After India Under-19 were bowled out for 428 in 81.3 overs, the hosts faced a setback late into Day 2's play as Deepesh Devndran dismissed Alex Lee Young for a three-ball duck. Australia are 8/1 after six overs, trailing by 177 runs.
Carnage from Suryavanshi
Earlier on Day 1, Suryavanshi and Mhatre looked to dominate the new-ball bowlers. Mhatre departed early for a 15-ball 21 to Hayden Schiller. Vihaan Malhotra fell early as well but Suryavanshi's attacking display did not take a back seat. He hit Aryan Sharma for two sixes to reach his fifty from 37 balls. Trivedi looked to score quickly as well.
Suryavanshi continued to torment Aussie bowlers. Meanwhile, Trivedi reached his fifty from 57 deliveries. Shortly after the lunch break, Suryavanshi hit Aryan for a six and two fours. He reached his century from just 78 balls. Schiller returned to break the partnership. Suryavanshi departed for an 86-ball 113, featuring nine fours and eight sixes.
Trivedi scores century
India were 221/2 after 32.1 overs when Suryavanshi returned to the pavilion. Trivedi and Abhigyan Kundu took India past Australia's score. Wicketkeeper-batter Kundu fell to skipper Malajczuk in the 47th over. Trivedi got to his century from 134 balls in the 49th over.
Rahul Kumar's stay at the crease was cut short as he was run out. With the old ball, Schiller dismissed RS Ambrish for a single-digit score. After taking a beating, Aryan had his first wicket in the 24th over he bowled on Day 2. Trivedi departed after scoring 140 runs from 192 balls. He hit 19 fours in his knock.
Khilan’s cameo takes score past 400
Khilan Patel looked to take risks and found the fence as well. He missed his half-century by one run as he handed a catch back to bowler Malajczuk. His run-a-ball 49 featured seven fours and two sixes. The tailenders did not frustrate Aussie bowlers as the visitors were bowled out for 428.
On Day 3, Indian bowlers will look to rule out Australia's comeback and bowl them out. Devendran will be the one to look out for as he claimed a five-wicket haul in the first innings.
