Story Highlights:

West Indies have not won a T20I against India in India since 2019.

Rohit Sharma's T20I record in India-West Indies clashes is unlikely to be broken soon.

After winning the ODI series 2-1, India will take on West Indies in the five-T20I series. The Shreyas Iyer-led side is fresh off their Asian Games 2026 gold medal win over Pakistan in the final. But, the reigning T20 World champions face the two-time T20 World champions. West Indies have not been at the best so far but T20 remains to be their best format. They can be considered a powerhouse of T20 cricket with never-ending supply for T20 franchise cricket across the world. They were impressive in the T20 World Cup 2026 as well, giving India scare in the quarterfinal clash where Sanju Samson saved the day for the hosts. As India and West Indies lock horns for the first T20I of the fivet-T20I series, here’s a deep dive into the records.

India vs West Indies head to head

India and West Indies have gone up against each other 31 times in T20Is from 2009 to 2026. India have had the upper hand with 20 wins. West Indies have won 10 of them whereas one ended in no result.

West Indies have played 11 T20Is on Indian soil, winning just two. The last time they toured India for a T20I series was in 2022 when they faced a whitewash at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, the same venue where they won the T20 World Cup 2016 final against England.

West Indies' two wins on Indian soil came at Wankhede Stadium and Thiruvananthapuram. West Indies' previous T20I win in India against the hosts was in 2019.

India vs West Indies highest totals and run chases

The highest total in an India-West Indies T20I was registered in 2016. In Florida, West Indies posted 245/6. In the run chase, India posted 244/4 and lost the match by one run. On Indian soil, the highest score is 240/3 which came in 2019 in Mumbai.

The highest successful run chase belongs to India when they chased down 208 with four wickets in hand in Hyderabad in 2019. That was the only time West Indies crossed the 200-run mark in T20Is on Indian soil.

Meanwhile, West Indies possess the record for the lowest score. They scored 95/9 against India in 2019. Meanwhile, India's lowest T20I score against West Indies is 138 all out. India have never scored less than 150 in T20Is against the Caribbean side.

Top run-scorer in India vs West Indies T20I clashes

Former India T20I captain Rohit Sharma holds the record for most runs in India-West Indies T20I clashes. From 22 T20Is, he has 693 runs at an average of 38.50 and strike rate of 142.88 including a ton and five fifties. He is followed by West Indies' former wicketkeeper-batter Nicholas Pooran (592 runs from 20 T20Is) and India's former skipper Virat Kohli (570 runs from 13 T20I innings). The next on the list is discarded T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav with 426 runs from 12 T20I innings.

In the current T20I squad, there are two batters who can challenge Pooran's record as dethroning Rohit from the top will take a herculean effort. Hetmyer has 422 runs from 19 T20I innings at an average of 23.44 and strike rate of 134.82 including three fifties. He is closely followed by Rovman Powell with 408 runs from 17 innings at an average of 31.88 and strike rate of 143.15 including two fifties. It is yet to be seen whether Hetmyer bats at no.3 like he did in T20 World Cup 2026. Only then, he will have a chance to surpass Pooran and get close to Rohit’s record. Powell may not get many chances or enough deliveries as he bats in the middle order. It will be interesting to see which position Powell bats at in the T20I series.

Top wicket-taker in India vs West Indies T20I history

Left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav has the most wickets for India against West Indies. From nine T20Is, he has 17 wickets at an average of 13.41. But, he has not been a regular in the T20I side. He wasn't part of the Asian Games squad either and played in the recently-concluded ODI series.

On the list of top Indian wicket-takers against India, Arshdeep Singh follows Kuldeep with 14 wickets from 11 T20Is at an average of 22.28. Arshdeep is followed by three players — Bhuvneshwar Kumar (13 wickets), Jason Holder (13 wickets) and Obed McCoy (12 wickets) — who are not part of the squads. An out-of-form Ravi Bishnoi has a chance to move up the list. He has 11 wickets from 10 T20Is. For West Indies, pace all-rounder Romario Shepherd (11 wickets) and left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein (10 wickets) can move up as well.

Highest T20I scores by a batter

For West Indies, Evin Lewis is the only centurion against India in the format. He is not part of the current squad. Lewis holds the record for highest score in India-West Indies T20Is. In 2017, he scored an unbeaten 125 in Kingston.

For India, there have been two T20I centurions against India. Rohit scored an unbeaten 111 from 61 in 2018. Two years earlier, KL Rahul scored an unbeaten 110. Among players in current squads, Sanju Samson came close to a century. Samson scored an unbeaten 97 in India's must-win T20 World Cup 2026 clash against West Indies earlier this year.

McCoy holds the record with six wickets for 17 runs in a T20I in 2022. No Indian bowler has a five-wicket haul against West Indies in T20Is. West Indies won the game by five wickets. The best bowling figures record belongs to leggie Bishnoi with four wickets for 16 runs in 2.4 overs in 2022. India won that game by 88 runs.

On Indian soil, the record belongs to Kuldeep who took three wickets for 13 runs against West Indies at Eden Gardens in 2018. For West Indies, Roston Chase has taken three wickets for 25 runs against India at Eden Gardens in 2022.
