The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) is set to undertake a major governance reset just ahead of the crucial election in December. Several sports governing bodies are set to fall under the new law, including the Indian Cricket Board.
According to a report by The Times of India, a Special General Body Meeting is scheduled to adopt an amended constitution aligned with the National Sports Governance Act 2025. The meeting, due to take place on Tuesday, marks an important step as the first four-year term of the PT Usha-led executive committee draws to a close.

Elections must be completed by 10 December 2026 under the new statutory framework. Key amendments include limiting executive committees to a maximum of 15 members, clearer provisions for identifying Sportspersons of Outstanding Merit, age and tenure restrictions, and cooling-off periods.
Some federations are finding it difficult to align with it since the selected provisions of the Act were implemented on January 1, 2026; some have already started aligning their constitutions.
BCCI set to fall under new law
In a broader development, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is also expected to eventually fall under the Act’s regulatory ambit, as per reports by TOI. Once the National Sports Board becomes fully operational, the BCCI will need to seek fresh recognition as a national sports body and hold its elections in accordance with the new law.
The changes also pave the way for the National Sports Board, which will hold powers to recognise or derecognise National Sports Federations. All affiliated National Sports Federations and State Olympic Associations are expected to participate in the discussions.
