The Indian cricket landscape has a thrilling new focal point in 15-year-old prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, whose meteoric rise has fueled intense anticipation for his eventual international debut. The young batter left everyone across the globe in utter awe during the recent IPL, displaying a breathtaking ability to dismantle elite bowling attacks with an aggressive, top-tier mindset. What truly intensified the excitement surrounding his potential, however, was how he seamlessly blended this ultra-aggressive style with flashes of tactical maturity that seemed far advanced for someone his age.

Paddy Upton wants Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to be prepared for failure
Yet, the inherently volatile nature of professional sports has quickly caught up with the teenager during his current stint with India A in Sri Lanka's Tri-Nation A Series. Not only has Sooryavanshi faced a frustrating rut on the pitch, failing to capitalise on several solid starts—but he has also run into significant disciplinary trouble off it. A heated on-field altercation with an opposing player has thrust him into the middle of a media storm, drawing sharp backlash from cricket purists and triggering reports of impending penalties for those involved.
Losing momentum and facing heavy public criticism all at once can be a destabilizing experience for a 15-year-old suddenly thrust into the limelight. Recognising this vulnerability, legendary mental conditioning coach Paddy Upton, renowned for his pivotal role in India’s historic 2011 World Cup victory, stressed that support staff must urgently shield the youngster by teaching him how to cope with setbacks. Upton pointed out that every great player encounters a dry spell, and the ultimate test for Sooryavanshi will be how well he is prepared to handle the moments when his natural talent alone isn't enough to secure runs.
“One of the first things I would do is prepare him (Sooryavanshi) for failure. To say there’s a good chance that in your first two or three innings, you don’t score runs. What is that going to feel like? What’s that going to look like? What’s that experience going to be like? And how are you going to manage yourself? So one of the key things is to prepare him for failure. His single biggest challenge, I believe, is how he manages the external noise away from the playing arena," Upton told Sportstar.

Sooryavanshi's parents to accompany him on Ireland, England tours
Upton's argument certainly makes sense in view of the recent incident involving Sooryavanshi as the batting prodigy will have a point to prove with the bat in the tri-series final on June 21. Right after the tri-series, Sooryavanshi will head to the biggest breakthrough of his life, i.e for the Ireland and England tour. He won't be alone in the white-ball tour as he will be accompanied by his parents after getting a green signal from the BCCI.
