England pacer Brydon Carse has been dropped from England's squad for second Test against Pakistan at Lord's after a nightclub incident in Derby on August 22 night which led to him being detained by the police briefly. In the past 12 months, England cricketers have been under the scanner over drinking culture. In the previous Test series against New Zealand, former skipper Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson had an incident in a nightclub as well which led to them missing the second Test of the series. As the infamous incidents continue, former England captain Michael Vaughan has called for strict punishment. He believes that the Cricket Regulator may end up making an example out of someone, if not Carse to prevent such incidents in the future.
"Someone is going to have to get a punishment that sends a shiver down the whole England cricket team and right down through the programme, so that everyone knows that if you misbehave or bring any kind of bad reputation on to this team, you know what's going to come," Vaughan told BBC Radio 5 Live.
"It's the only punishment that will really hurt players."
The long list of altercations
Stokes and Atkinson were cleared by the Cricket Regular after a Saracens rugby player punched England's security staff. During the Ashes 2025-26, Ben Duckett was seen drunk on the infamous Noosa trip. Several other players were seen drinking and partying as well. Before that, Harry Brook copped a blow from a Wellington nightclub bouncer. Brook was out partying with Jacob Bethell and Josh Tongue. Brook was reprimanded by the ECB as well.
Vaughan would feel for Carse but wants ECB to set a precedent
Despite the call for a strict punishment, Vaughan wants Carse to get support. He feels that Carse needs someone to give him better advice than the one he is currently getting. He was out partying with Durham teammates Stokes and Matthew Potts when he was handcuffed outside a Derby nightclub.
However, he would feel for Carse if the ECB decides to make an example out of him. He wants ECB to set a precedent, establishing zero tolerance for such incidents. He went on to say that the skipper Joe Root will be furious over Carse's actions, especially after he lifted the night curfew.
Carse was not part of the first Test of the series at Headingley, Leeds. He was released from the squad to represent Durham against Derbyshire in County Championship Division Two match where Stokes and Potts took fifers. The second Test of the series begins on August 27.
