India will lock horns against Sri Lanka in the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, which gets underway on Saturday, August 15 in Galle. In the first Test, India's skipper Shubman Gill will have a big chance to write his name in the history books.

If Gill manages to amass 157 runs in the two Tests against Sri Lanka, then he will become the first Indian batter to accumulate 3,000 runs in the World Test Championship (WTC). As of now, Gill has 2,843 runs in 40 WTC games.

Rishabh Pant and former India skipper Rohit Sharma are the other prominent Indian batters behind gill in the WTC run-scoring charts. Pant has managed to gather 2,780 runs from 71 innings in 40 games, while Rohit finished his WTC journey with 2,716 runs from 40 games.

Joe Root sits at the top of the World Test Championship's all-time batting charts. The England Test captain has smashed 6,651 runs from 77 WTC games, further strengthening his remarkable record in the longest format, where he also stands second on the overall list of leading run-scorers.
Gill is also on the verge of reaching another landmark as India's Test skipper in the ongoing 2025-27 WTC cycle. Having accumulated 950 runs from eight matches since taking charge, he needs 50 runs to become the first Indian captain to reach 1,000 runs in a single WTC cycle. He is also in contention to become the first Indian batter overall to cross the 3,000-run mark in WTC history.
