India's top-order batter Shubman Gill on January 25 scored his 14th first-class century. Gill on his Ranji Trophy return departed for a single-digit score in the first innings but made a comeback with a century amidst collapse against Karnataka at M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. 

On Day 3 of the clash, Gill reached his century from 159 balls. After getting bowled out for 55 in the first innings, Punjab batters barring Gill did not fare well. They lost six wickets for 84 runs. Then Gill shared a 63-run partnership for the seventh wicket with Mayank Markande who scored 27 runs from 35 balls. 

Gill was dismissed lbw by Shreyas Gopal. He scored 102 runs from 171 balls featuring 14 fours and three sixes. The 25-year-old shared a 40-run partnership for the eighth wicket with Sukhdeep Bajwa who remained unbeaten for 26 off 38 balls. After his wicket, Punjab were bowled out for 213 from 63.4 overs. Punjab lost the match by an innings and 207 runs.

Gill reached the milestone during the second session of day's play. Earlier, Karnataka posted a massive total on the board after bowling out Punjab for a paltry score. Smaran Ravichandran scored 203 runs from 277 balls. Other batters got starts but could not convert them into big scores. No Karnataka batter registered a single-digit score as they took a massive 420-run lead after the first innings.

Gill's next appearance on international stage

It is yet to be seen whether Gill plays in Punjab's next Ranji match. He will be back in the international arena in the three-ODI series against England which will commence on February 6. The youngster has been appointed as vice-captain for ICC Champions Trophy 2025 as well.

Gill's lean patch in Australia

Gill missed the first Test in Perth due to a thumb injury he suffered during match simulations while fielding in the slip cordon. He followed it up with an unbeaten half-century in pink-ball warm-up game. In the pink-ball Test, he got starts but could not convert them into big scores. In the Gabba Test which ended in a draw, he scored just one run in the first innings. He warmed the benches for the MCG Test. In the final Test of the series in Sydney, he could not get a big score either. From five innings, he scored 93 runs in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.
