Selectors reportedly considering leadership change in India’s T20I setup after IPL 2026.

Shreyas Iyer emerges as frontrunner amid Surya’s dip in form and fitness concerns.

In a surprising turn of events, it has been reported that the national selectors are considering a change in the leadership in the T20I setup. As per a latest report from Times of India, BCCI selectors are thinking of replacing Suryakumar Yadav as India's T20I captain because of lack of batting form from a very long time.

Shreyas Iyer to replace Suryakumar Yadav as captain in T20Is?

The selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar will meet after the end of IPL 2026 to select the T20I squad for the upcoming two-match series against Ireland, followed by a five-game series in England.

As per the report, Shreyas Iyer could be the one to replace Surya from the captaincy position, given his great captaincy and batting form in the recent IPL seasons. However, Surya led India to win the ICC T20 World Cup in March this year his chances of continuing the leadership role are very slim.

After the T20 WC triumph, Surya publicly expressed his wish to lead India at the LA Olympics and next T20 WC, as both tournaments are set to take place in 2028. In the 2026 T20WC, Surya managed to amass 242 runs in nine innings, interestingly 84 of thos runs came against USA in India's campaign opener.

Is Surya facing fitness concerns?

The report further claims that the Mumbai Indians (MI) star is dealing with a niggle from the previous IPL edition, as he was seen batting and fielding for MI with a "taped right wrist". Additionally, The current T20I skipper had his right wrist taped after placing cotton pads on it ahead of batting sessions.

The lack of batting form and prolonged injury concern could play a key factor in the decision of selectors, as the right-hand batter does not have age on his side either. On the other hand, Shreyas Iyer has established himself as a dependable leader in T20s, with leading Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings to the final and winning the championship with KKR in 2024.

However, Shreyas last played a T20I for India in December 2023. But, he has been a consistent performer with the bat in IPL, scoring 603 runs for Punjab Kings in the 2025 edition with six half-centuries under his belt. So far in the 2026 season, the PBKS skipper has picked up from where he left, amassing 333 runs in 10 games at an average of 47.57 with a strike rate of 164.04.
