Jemimah Rodrigues wants India to not be defensive against Australia in their Women's T20 World Cup 2026 clash

India will take on Australia in a must-win clash on June 28

Faced with a must-win situation to keep their semifinal dreams alive, India’s women's cricket team is gearing up for a high-stakes T20 World Cup 2026 showdown against Australia at Lord's this Sunday. Indian batter Jemimah Rodrigues emphasized that Harmanpreet Kaur’s squad cannot afford a timid approach. Instead, she insists that India must embrace a dominant and aggressive style of play to overcome the formidable six-time champions.

Historically, Australia has been a tough nut to crack for India, who have managed just 10 victories in their 38 T20I encounters since 2008. Furthermore, India hasn't tasted victory against Australia in a T20 World Cup since their 17-run win in Sydney back in 2020, a memorable match defined by Poonam Yadav's spectacular four-wicket haul.

You can't be defensive against Australia: Jemimah Rodrigues

Speaking on JioStar's 'Champions Huddle', Rodrigues, who famously scored an ODI World Cup semifinal century against the Aussies, explained that matching Australia's relentless pressure is key. She noted that because Australia constantly attacks and never allows opponents to settle, India must fight fire with fire, matching their intensity and actively taking control of the game to succeed.

"The thing about Australia is that they never let you settle. They are always attacking, always putting pressure. If you want to do well against them, you can't be defensive. You must dominate and take the game to them and our team enjoys that challenge," Jemimah said.

Drawing on her past success of scoring a brilliant ODI World Cup semifinal century against Australia, Rodrigues stated that a passive approach will not work against the six-time champions in London. She insisted that India’s best path to victory is to aggressively dictate the tempo of the match, matching Australia's trademark intensity while maintaining absolute confidence in their own tactical execution.

Rodrigues pointed out that the current squad is far from intimidated, given their extensive experience against the Aussies. Speaking to the depth of the team, she noted that key players like opener Shafali Verma and pace spearhead Renuka Singh have historically performed well against Australia. For Rodrigues, the ultimate deciding factor will not be familiarity, but how effectively the team backs their skills and maintains an aggressive mindset under pressure on match day.

This high-stakes clash comes on the heels of a morale-boosting five-wicket victory over Bangladesh at Old Trafford. That crucial win comfortably positioned India second in the standings with six points from four games. Bolstered by a strong +2.268 net run rate, Harmanpreet Kaur's side enters the final stretch with their semifinal destiny firmly in their own hands.
