He's set to be appointed as the new head coach of Sydney Thunder ahead of the upcoming BBL.

Former England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff is set to begin a fresh chapter in his coaching career after reportedly being appointed as the new head coach of Sydney Thunder ahead of the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) season. The development comes after Flintoff’s recent stint with the England Lions setup, where he impressed with his leadership during the side’s tour of Australia.

According to reports, Sydney Thunder are expected to officially announce Flintoff as their new coach soon, making it one of the most high-profile appointments ahead of the BBL 2026 season. The franchise had been searching for a new mentor after parting ways with Trevor Bayliss earlier this year.

Andrew Flintoff set for first major overseas franchise coaching role

Flintoff’s appointment marks his first major overseas franchise coaching assignment. The former England star has steadily built his coaching resume over the last two years, having worked with England’s white-ball setup as a consultant before taking charge of the England Lions.

He also coached Northern Superchargers in The Hundred during the 2024 and 2025 seasons, guiding the side to consecutive playoff appearances. However, Andrew Flintoff did not continue with the franchise after ownership changes saw the team rebranded as Sunrisers Leeds.

Sydney Thunder had made it clear that they wanted a “world-class T20 coach” after enduring an inconsistent spell under Bayliss. Although the franchise reached the BBL final during the 2024-25 campaign, they also finished at the bottom of the table in two separate seasons during his tenure.

Flintoff’s previous experience in Australian cricket came as a player when he represented Brisbane Heat during the 2014-15 BBL season, which eventually turned out to be the final team of his professional playing career.

Warner’s captaincy future could be among Flintoff’s first challenges

One of Andrew Flintoff’s immediate tasks at Sydney Thunder could involve the leadership situation surrounding veteran opener David Warner. Reports suggest Warner is expected to plead guilty in a drink-driving case later this year, leaving uncertainty around his captaincy future with the franchise.

Meanwhile, Cricket New South Wales have also reshaped several coaching roles across their system recently, with James Hopes joining Sydney Sixers and Brad Haddin taking over as New South Wales head coach.
