Indian football legend Bhaichung Bhutia has backed Portugal to overcome Croatia in one of the most anticipated Round of 32 clashes at the FIFA World Cup 2026, insisting Roberto Martinez's side has the quality to elevate its performances when it matters the most.
The blockbuster encounter is expected to feature two of football's biggest icons, Cristiano Ronaldo and Luka Modric, with both veterans potentially making their final FIFA World Cup appearances.
Bhaichung Bhutia backs Portugal to progress
Portugal endured a mixed group-stage campaign, opening with a surprise draw against DR Congo before producing a dominant 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan, where Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice to move past Eusebio on the nation's all-time FIFA World Cup scoring list.
However, a defeat to Colombia saw Portugal finish second in their group, setting up a difficult Round of 32 meeting with Croatia.
Despite Portugal's inconsistent performances so far, Bhaichung Bhutia believes the knockout stage presents an entirely different challenge and expects the European giants to raise their level.
Speaking ahead of the contest, the former India captain said he does not expect Croatia to eliminate Portugal, adding that the Portuguese squad possesses enough quality to emerge as genuine title contenders once the knockout rounds begin.
"I do not see Croatia knocking them out. Portugal are definitely contenders, though we have not seen them play like one so far. But knockout stages are different," Bhutia said.
Portugal's quality extends beyond Cristiano Ronaldo
Bhutia also highlighted Portugal's attacking depth, suggesting the team is no longer solely dependent on Ronaldo despite the legendary forward continuing to rewrite the record books.
According to Bhutia, Portugal have several players capable of deciding matches on their own, though he stressed that the team's creative midfield must consistently provide opportunities for Ronaldo in front of goal.
With a place in the Round of 16 on the line, Portugal will be aiming to justify Bhutia's confidence against a Croatian side renowned for its experience and resilience on the biggest stage.
