An extraordinary scene unfolded ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-final between Morocco and France as a pre-match press conference was briefly thrown into disarray following an altercation between two journalists.
Morocco star Brahim Diaz and head coach Mohamed Ouahbi were addressing the media when the confrontation erupted, forcing FIFA officials and Royal Moroccan Football Federation (RMFF) staff to step in and restore order.
Journalists clash during Morocco's World Cup press conference
The incident occurred while Diaz was answering a question about Morocco's mindset heading into the highly anticipated quarter-final against France. Moments into his response, raised voices interrupted the press conference, leaving the Real Madrid attacker visibly surprised.
Videos circulating on social media captured one of the journalists repeatedly shouting:
"But why did you hit me? But why did you hit me? You can't hit me."
As tensions escalated, press officers from FIFA and the RMFF immediately intervened in an attempt to calm the situation. A member of the organizing staff could be heard urging those involved to de-escalate the confrontation.
Despite the officials' efforts, the argument continued for several moments before the situation was eventually brought under control. Diaz, initially stunned by the interruption, smiled at the unusual scenes but admitted he had completely lost his train of thought. An apology was later offered to the Morocco international before the original question was repeated, allowing the press conference to resume.
FIFA officials restore order after bizarre media-room incident
Additional footage shared by Sky Germany reporter Kerry Hau showed FIFA staff separating the two journalists as voices continued to rise inside the media room. Hau later described the confrontation as a "completely crazy and embarrassing incident" that required intervention from tournament officials.
One of the journalists involved, Brazilian reporter Marcelo Courrege of Globo, later issued a statement explaining the altercation and confirmed that the disagreement was resolved shortly afterward.
According to Courrege, both journalists settled the matter amicably following the incident, even sharing a hug and taking a photograph together.
