Murali Sreeshankar had a point to prove at Zurich Diamond League 2023. After failing to advance past the qualifications in the World Championships, Sreeshankar failed to finish in the top three at the men’s long jump event on August 31. He finished fifth with a 7.99-metre jump in his first attempt.
World Champion Miltiádis Tentóglou finished on top with his final throw which was a whopping 8.20 metre. The Greek athlete snatched victory from the jaws of defeat as he left Tajay Gayle’s 8.07 metre jump behind.
Sreeshankar's battle for the top spot
Sreeshankar began the second round with a commendable jump of 7.96 metres, initially securing a second-place position. However, Miltiadis Tentoglou of Greece seized the top spot with a leap of 8.04 metres. Despite making a foul jump in his third attempt, Sreeshankar managed to maintain his second-place standing at the end of the round.
Shifting rankings and close competition
The dynamics changed rapidly in the following rounds. Tajay Gayle from Jamaica moved ahead with an impressive jump of 8.07 metres, pushing Sreeshankar to third place. Sreeshankar held onto the third position with a 7.96-metre jump in his fourth attempt, but was soon overtaken by Jarrion Lawson from the United States, who jumped 8.05 metres.
Final standings and top performers
Towards the final stages, Czech Republic's Radek Juska jumped 8.04 metres, relegating Sreeshankar to fifth place. The competition concluded with only the top three athletes, Gayle, Miltiadis, and Lawson, advancing to the sixth and final jump.
While Sreeshankar's performance was noteworthy, he narrowly missed out on progressing to the final round. Despite the setback, the young Indian athlete showcased great promise, holding his own in a field of world-class competitors. With his talent and determination, Sreeshankar remains a strong contender for future international long jump events.
