India's 27-year-old Seema Kaliramna, a PhD aspirant and a mother of a three-year-old son, won a bronze medal in women's discus throw event at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow on July 30. Seema fouled three times but her best throw of 58.65m helped secure the third position.
Jamaica's Samantha Hall won the gold medal with a 61.66m throw. Canada's Julia Tunks' best throw as 60.67m, earning her a silver medal.

The other Indian at the event was Nidhi Rani. She registered a 55.67m throw to finish fourth.

The Covid-19 disruption and Seema’s journey to CWG 2026
Hailing from Haryana's Bhiwani district, Seema's father inspired her to take up sport. Her father had competed in basketball, javelin throw. Her husband, Ravindrer, is a coach. A knee injury turned out to be a major obstacle in her journey. With Covid-19 pandemic affecting the world, she had to spend three years on the sideline. In 2022, she gave berth to her son, Rudra. However, it took her just 11 months to return to training after the birth of her first child.
On return, it wasn't easy for Seema to get back into the groove straightaway. She struggled but made up for it at the National Inter-Stage Senior Athletics Championships in Bhubaneshwar with her personal best throw of 59.73m. She earned qualification for CWG 2026 and went on to bag a gold.
Seema opens up on struggles, dedicates bronze to husband
"I am very happy. This was my first Commonwealth Games, and winning a bronze medal makes it even more special. I did not face any major difficulties during the competition. The only challenge was the cold weather, because I had to keep warming up repeatedly. Overall, it was a very good competition,” she told ANI after bagging the bronze medal.Â
“My husband arrived just two days ago. He [her son] was telling me to take him along, but this is a very emotional moment. My situation is such that I cannot bring my son with me. It is extremely difficult and painful. You can call it a sacrifice," she added.
Seema won India's fourth bronze medal at the event. India have three gold and 10 silver, making them the 10th-ranked nation on the medals tally.Â
