Sarvesh Kushare scripted history in Glasgow as he became first Indian to win a silver medal in men's high jump event in Commonwealth Games history. Kushare bagged the silver with a 2.25 metre jump. Jamaica's Romaine Beckford won the gold with a 2.25m jump as he cleared it in first attempt.
The 31-year-old national record holder was unsuccessful in his first two attempts to clear 2.25m. He did it in his third attempt. Later, both Kushare and Beckford tried to clear 2.28m but couldn't. The bronze medal went to England's Jack Kimani with 2.20m.

Shankar retires early, Ram finishes fifth
When Kushare was struggling, he got tips from Tejaswin Shankar from the sidelines. Shankar participated at the event as well. But, he opted to retire after not being able to clear 2.05 in his first attempt. The decision to retire seems to be a precautionary one to prevent his knee from an injury ahead of the men's decathlon event later this week.

The third Indian who participated at the event was Adarsh Ram. He was able to clear 2.15m and finished fifth.
Asian Games, LA Olympics next target
Hailing from Devargaon village in Maharashtra's Nashik district, son of an onion farmer Kushare has already set sights on the Asian Games next month and the Los Angeles Olympics 2028.
"It's my first medal, also my first medal at a major event. Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games are the Games that push for the Olympics. I want to win a medal. I will do my best," Kushare told PTI after his event.
"I want to win a gold medal at the Asian Games."
Earlier in July 2026, Kushare had scripted history in Monaco. He became the first Indian high jumper with a podium finish at a Diamond League meet. He cleared 2.26m to earn the third spot. However, his personal best is 2.31m which he achieved at the National Inter-State Championships in Bhuvneshwar in June 2026.
