Former Super Bowl–winning player emerges as a strong candidate for the Giants’ head coaching role.

The franchise looks to rebuild its identity after a disappointing start to the season.

New York Giants have entered yet another rebuilding phase after parting ways with head coach Brian Daboll, marking the latest coaching shake-up in the NFL. Despite flashes of brilliance during his tenure, Daboll’s 2-8 start to his fourth season ultimately sealed his fate. With the Giants once again searching for a new leader, one familiar name has emerged as a strong potential candidate — former Las Vegas Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce.

New York Giants hit reset after firing Brian Daboll

The decision to move on from Daboll wasn’t entirely unexpected. After leading the Giants to moments of promise early in his stint, the team’s lack of consistency and failure to compete this season forced the front office to make a change. The move also puts increased pressure on general manager Joe Schoen, who now faces a critical offseason in shaping the future of the franchise.

The New York Giants’ head coaching job, despite the challenges, remains appealing. With Jaxson Dart showing potential at quarterback and a talented roster core, the role offers the opportunity to steer a young team with upside. However, lingering front-office instability and a history of underachievement may make it difficult to lure top-tier coaching talent.

Antonio Pierce: A familiar face with Giants ties

According to Sports Illustrated’s Conor Orr, Antonio Pierce could be a serious contender for the Giants’ vacant head coaching position.

Orr wrote, “Pierce didn’t get much of a puncher’s chance with the Raiders, but he is a former Super Bowl–winning linebacker of the Giants who had Tom Coughlin on staff in Las Vegas as an advisor.”

Pierce’s connection to the New York Giants organization runs deep. A Super Bowl–winning linebacker from the franchise’s championship run under Coughlin, the 47-year-old remains highly respected by ownership and fans alike. His brief but spirited tenure with the Raiders showcased his leadership qualities, even if the situation there wasn’t ideal.

Orr further noted, “The 47-year-old is a critical piece of the organization’s history and is admired by ownership. Pierce showed some talent as a head coach, rescuing the formerly Josh McDaniels–coached Raiders and earning the full-time job for one season in 2024 before Tom Brady’s arrival as minority owner.”

A coach with experience and grit

While Pierce’s stint with the Raiders was cut short, his experience dealing with one of the most turbulent franchises in football adds to his credibility. Many observers believe his early promotion to head coach came too soon, as he bypassed the traditional progression through coordinator roles. Still, that trial by fire may now serve as valuable preparation for a second opportunity.

Interestingly, the Raiders’ performance has declined since Pierce’s departure, suggesting he may have been more effective than critics initially believed. His combination of leadership, discipline, and historical ties to New York makes him an intriguing — and perhaps fitting — choice to help restore the New York Giants’ identity.
