After the win, Drake Maye, who has quickly become a standout player for the Patriots, took the opportunity to praise his teammates on defence

The New England Patriots secured an important victory over the Chicago Bears on Sunday, marking a key moment in their efforts to turn around a challenging National Football League (NFL) season. Rookie quarterback Drake Maye delivered a strong performance, but it was the defensive unit that stole the spotlight, according to Maye’s own words after the game. The Patriots’ victory at Soldier Field highlighted the team's growing cohesion and determination as they aim to finish the season on a high note.

Maye credits defence in post-game interview

After the win, Maye, who has quickly become a standout player for the Patriots, took the opportunity to praise his teammates on defence. In a humble gesture during his post-game interview, the former North Carolina star made it clear that he valued the collective effort over individual accolades.

“Phones down. Phones down, notepads down real quick,” Maye requested, encouraging the press room to focus on the defence’s efforts. “Clap it up for the defence. Clap it up. Somebody else, clap it up,” Maye urged, giving credit where it was due.

“I feel like, all I’ve got is 11 routes at a time, but I know 15, 20 plays,” Maye continued. “It’s a good feeling sitting over there. You know, offence, as a quarterback, that type of defensive performance … credit them. Credit them in practice this week.”

Maye also reflected on how the Patriots’ defence reminded him of the intensity and challenges he faced in training camp. “It’s pretty cool to watch and it’s good to be on the other side of the ball,” he concluded, acknowledging the defence's role in the team’s success.

Jerod Mayo praises Caleb Williams' potential

Ahead of the game, much of the attention was on the matchup between two top quarterback prospects Maye and Chicago's Caleb Williams. Williams, who has been widely regarded as a future star in the NFL, faced off against Maye in a contest that showcased the promise of both young quarterbacks.

Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo, aware of Williams' potential, offered his take on the young QB's future. “I still believe Caleb Williams will be a very good player in this league,” Mayo said after the game. “But, just like any rookie, he’s going to go through his ups and downs. It doesn’t matter what position you play. He’ll be a special player. He’s got to stick to it.”

What's next for the Patriots?

The victory over the Bears is a much-needed boost for the Patriots as they look to gain momentum in the second half of the season. With a tough schedule ahead, the team is focused on maintaining their winning ways to finish the year strong.

Upcoming matchups include:

November 17th – vs Los Angeles Rams
November 24th – vs Miami Dolphins
December 1st – vs Indianapolis Colts
December 15th – vs Arizona Cardinals
December 22nd – vs Buffalo Bills

As the Patriots gear up for these challenges, Maye’s leadership, combined with the defence’s stellar play, could be the key to their success in the crucial weeks ahead.
