The New York Jets suffered a dismal start to the season losing 8 of their 11 matches. The Jets have taken preventive measures for the loss firing their GM Joe Douglas after a tenure of five years. The New York Jets are reportedly looking to part ways with veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers in 2025, according to sources shared with SNY's Connor Hughes.

This development comes as the Jets are undergoing significant changes, having recently fired general manager Joe Douglas on Tuesday. The team also dismissed head coach Robert Saleh earlier this season following a 2-3 start and stripped offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett of his play-calling duties.

What would Rodgers absence mean

Moving on from Rodgers in the offseason would mark the conclusion of a difficult chapter for the franchise. The Jets entered 2024 with high hopes, expecting to contend for the top spot in the AFC with a healthy Rodgers, but those aspirations have been far from realized.

Currently holding a 3-8 record, tied for the worst in the AFC East, the Jets have struggled under interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich, going just 1-5.

Rodgers has had a tough season, failing to reach his usual level of performance. While he has completed 63.4% of his passes for 17 touchdowns and seven interceptions, his 6.4 yards per attempt and 88.9 passer rating would be career lows for him as a full-time starter.

Replacement ahead

Jets owner Woody Johnson reportedly suggested benching Rodgers in favor of Tyrod Taylor after a Week 4 loss, believing Rodgers was holding the team back. However, the coaching staff persuaded Johnson to reconsider, fearing the decision could cause issues in the locker room and harm Rodgers' reputation.

To try to improve the team's prospects, the Jets made a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders in October, bringing in Rodgers' former Green Bay Packers teammate, Davante Adams. Despite this move, the addition has had little impact, with Adams accumulating just 278 yards and one touchdown over five games.

Rodgers timeline

Rodgers, who was acquired from Green Bay in April 2023, was sidelined after only four snaps due to a torn Achilles tendon, ending his first season with the team prematurely. He is under contract with the Jets through 2025, though his deal no longer carries guaranteed money, according to Over The Cap.

The Jets have not had a season with more than seven wins since Douglas took over as general manager in 2019. They also haven't made the playoffs since 2010, and have used 15 different quarterbacks since their last postseason appearance.
