The scenario requires a Boston Celtics loss in their game that night, combined with the Pistons' current four+ game lead. With just six regular-season games remaining, Detroit sits at 56-21, holding a commanding 4.5-game advantage over the second-place Celtics (51-25).

This development marks a stunning turnaround for a franchise that finished with the NBA's worst record just two seasons ago. 

Led by All-Star point guard Cade Cunningham, who has averaged 24.5 points, 9.9 assists, and 5.6 rebounds per game, the Pistons have dominated the East for most of the year, clinching a playoff berth earlier than any other Eastern team. 

Even after Cunningham was sidelined with a collapsed lung, Detroit continued winning, extending its lead through strong team play from contributors like Jalen Duren. The Pistons' magic number to lock up the No. 1 seed stands at just one or two entering Friday's action, depending on exact outcomes. 

A top seed would grant home-court advantage throughout the Eastern Conference playoffs, which begin April 18 after the play-in tournament, which runs from April 14 to 17.
