Luka Doncic’s third game with the Los Angeles Lakers didn’t go as planned, as the team suffered a tough 100-97 loss to the Charlotte Hornets on Wednesday. Despite a difficult performance, both Doncic and his teammates remain optimistic about his potential and future with the team.
Doncic's off night in shooting and turnovers
Doncic had an off night, finishing with 14 points on 5-of-18 shooting, including a rough 1-for-9 from beyond the three-point line. In addition to his scoring struggles, Doncic recorded six turnovers and five personal fouls in 33 minutes of play, his longest stint since joining the Lakers in the high-profile trade with Dallas.
It’s going to take a little time, Doncic acknowledged after the game. Today, a lot of rustiness from my part. Started the game with like four or five turnovers. That can’t happen. Just got to play basketball the right way.
Despite these struggles, Doncic managed to contribute with 11 rebounds and eight assists, but his shooting inefficiency was apparent. He is currently shooting just 16-for-45 in his three games with the Lakers, with a poor 5-for-24 from three-point range.
LeBron James isn’t worried
While back-to-back losses to Utah and Charlotte are concerning, LeBron James isn’t troubled by Doncic's early struggles.
It’s his third game since Christmas, and it’s his third game with us, James said. He still doesn’t know all the plays. He’s coming back from his injury, and we’re working through it together.
James’s confidence in Doncic highlights the team’s collective understanding that adapting to a new system takes time. Despite the turnover issues, Doncic's overall impact on the game was positive, as he led the Lakers in rebounds and posted the team’s best plus-13 rating.
Looking Ahead to the future
The Lakers acquired Doncic on February 2 in a blockbuster trade with Dallas, sending Anthony Davis the other way. Doncic is still adjusting, having missed significant time due to a calf injury.
I missed a lot of time, Doncic said. I’m just excited to get back to play.
With upcoming games against Portland, Denver, and a home matchup with the Mavericks, Doncic remains eager to find his groove with his new team and continue improving.
