Lakers To Target Mavericks' Center

The LA Lakers are reportedly considering a bombshell move to trade star rookie Dalton Knecht in exchange for Mavs Center Daniel Gafford. his potential trade, as suggested by Bleacher Report’s Eric Pincus, could address the Lakers’ ongoing struggles in the low post.

Despite admirable efforts from Alex Len and Jaxson Hayes, the Los Angeles Lakers' frontcourt has demonstrated significant limits this season. Gafford, an underestimated but impactful player, has the potential to provide the squad with the consistency and energy it desperately needs. The 26-year-old big man has been a standout for the Mavericks this season, averaging 12.3 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks per game while shooting an incredible 69.9% from the floor.

However, Daniel Gafford's recent knee injury, which could sideline him for the rest of the 2024-25 season, adds ambiguity to the trade. Despite this setback, his contributions to the Mavericks' NBA Finals appearance last season cannot be forgotten. In 22 playoff games, Gafford averaged 9.0 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks while shooting 63.4% from the field. His rim-running abilities, defensive presence, and infectious energy were critical to Dallas' success.

“Gafford doesn’t receive enough praise for his stable play on both ends,” Pincus noted. While he may not be the most skilled center in the league, his reliability and hustle make him a valuable asset for any team.

This potential trade could change both teams' lineups. The Mavericks would obtain a youthful talent in Knecht, while the Los Angeles Lakers would gain a proven big man to enhance their frontcourt. As the offseason approaches, all eyes will be on whether this deal will get materialised or not.
