Memphis Grizzlies star player, Ja Morant, has been frequently brought up in trade rumors. Morant's future with the franchise that drafted him is uncertain. In the 2025-26 NBA season, the star guard has had run-ins with the coaching staff, specifically with the head coach Tuomas Lisalo.
Ja Morant's underwhelming season so far
His numbers are also not that great, averaging 19.5 points, 3.3 rebounds and 8.1 assists through 20 games. Morant is one of the top guards who could show his presence in the trade market. As of January 10, the Grizzlies have reportedly started listening to the trade offers centered around the NBA guard, ESPN reported.
The Miami Heat is one the franchises linked to Morant. Sadly for the two-time All-Star, the Heat have "signaled" that they are moving on from him. The Athletic's Sam Amick disclosed on Friday's episode on FanDuel TV's "Run It Back" regarding the Heat's change in plans.
Amick claimed that the Heat are positive about landing Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo.
"Miami signaling they’re not going to pursue Ja Morant shows you they still have some level of hope when it comes to Giannis," Amick said.
Morant has not been in his best form this season, sparking trade speculations. But with the February 5 deadline nearing, Marc Stein of The Stein Line reported on Tuesday that he wants to continue with the Memphis Grizzlies.
"Ja has made it very clear he does not want to get traded. He wants to stay," Stein reported. "The reality is, I don’t think there is a huge market for him. I don’t think there’s a trade the Grizzlies could make to sell to their fans… He wants to stay but he also wants to have more say like he used too."
Ja Morant wanted to go to the Miami Heat at one point
Ja Morant's time with the Memphis Grizzlies could still be uncertain, despite informing the team about his wish to stay. Before he let the team know regarding continuing with the Grizzlies, league insider Michael Scotto reported on Friday that Morant wanted to play for the Miami Heat at some point.
"When Ja Morant said that he wanted to stay in Memphis, there had been talk for months around the league that Ja Morant wanted to go to Miami at a certain point," Scotto said.
Scotto said that Morant was disappointed with the Grizzlies for not offering him a contract extension. The star player is in the third year of his five-year, $197.2 million contract with the franchise.
Morant's injuries and controversies took a hit on his image in the league. He has been out multiple weeks over the last few seasons. The NBA player's off-court behaviour, which consisted of flaunting a gun, has also resulted in a suspension.
