The insider’s top five possibilities include the Knicks in first place due to the franchise’s massive business, endorsement, and media opportunities in the world’s largest market. A return to the Cavaliers was slotted in the options for a homecoming near Akron, combined with strong championship contention potential, followed by the Golden State Warriors, a stay with the Los Angeles Lakers, and retirement.

ESPN personality and NBA insider has identified the New York Knicks as the top potential destination for LeBron James in the 2026-27 season, placing the Cleveland Cavaliers second as the four-time NBA champion weighs his future at age 41. On Tuesday’s edition of First Take, Smith ranked James’ options as follows: the Knicks, the Cavaliers, the Golden State Warriors, the Los Angeles Lakers, and the last is Retirement. 

Smith cited New York’s unparalleled business, endorsement, and media opportunities as the biggest draw for the Knicks, while pointing to a homecoming near his Akron roots and legitimate title contention for the Cavaliers. The comments come shortly after the Lakers were eliminated from the playoffs, intensifying speculation about James’ plans as he enters unrestricted free agency.
