The Philadelphia 76ers are facing another setback as star guard Tyrese Maxey is expected to miss at least two weeks due to a right hamstring injury. This marks the latest injury blow to a team that has already been dealing with a series of challenges this National Basketball Association (NBA) season.

Maxey's Injury: what we know so far

Maxey, who has been a standout performer for the Sixers this season, sustained the injury during Philadelphia’s 110-98 loss to the LA Clippers. According to multiple sources, including ESPN's Shams Charania, the 24-year-old guard will undergo further evaluations, with a complete assessment of his condition expected later today. The injury comes as a tough blow for Maxey, who has been playing a crucial role in the 76ers' lineup.

Coach Nurse's response

Philadelphia’s head coach, Nick Nurse, spoke on the impact of Maxey’s injury after Thursday’s medical evaluation. “Not very good luck,” Nurse remarked. “We’ve got to hang in there and still find a way to compete and play better.” Despite the setback, Nurse emphasized the need for the team to maintain focus and keep pushing forward.

Maxey has been a key contributor for the 76ers, leading the team with an impressive 27.6 points per game and averaging a league-high 39.7 minutes per game. His absence will be keenly felt, as the team has already faced several struggles this season.

A season full of setbacks

Maxey’s injury is just the latest in a string of misfortunes for the 76ers. The team has already been without star centre Joel Embiid for much of the season. Embiid’s absence has been due to what the team calls "left knee management," as well as a three-game suspension following an altercation with a member of the media.

Additionally, the 76ers have been under intense scrutiny this season, with more NBA investigations (two) than wins (one) to their name. Last month, the NBA fined the 76ers $100,000 for violating the league's player participation policy, which stemmed from inconsistent statements regarding Embiid’s health.

Looking ahead

The 76ers are currently on a four-game losing streak and will be hoping to turn things around in their upcoming games. They will face the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday, with another home game scheduled against Charlotte on Sunday, followed by a matchup against the New York Knicks on Tuesday. Embiid is expected to make his long-awaited season debut against the Knicks.

As Coach Nurse put it, “We’ve got to play better. We’re taking two steps forward and two back. We’ve got to develop some consistency and play a little better.” With injuries piling up and challenges mounting, the 76ers will need to dig deep to stay competitive.
