'I feel like I can...': Travis Head breaks silence on Australia captaincy, makes feelings clear on leadership role

Travis Head have cemented himself as one of the important players in Australian cricket, but adding the captaincy tag to his name is not his priority. Despite his elevated stature across all three formats, the 32-year-old has played down any desire to take charge of the national side, stating that leadership ambitions are not motivating him at this stage of his playing career.

Head's influence on Australia's recent success has extended well beyond his aggressive batting. The South Australian all-rounder has provided the side with a valuable off-spin bowling, making him a key figure across all formats. His consistency and ability to perform in big games have earned him Australia cricket's biggest individual honours, with Head claiming the Allan Border Medal twice.

Head was given the responsibility to open the innings during the 2025-26 Ashes at and managed to play a big role in team's success. However leadership is nothing new for Head, who has been given the role of captain in the T20I side. However, the experienced batter does not believe he needs a tag to make impact within the dressing room, as he is very happy to play his part as a senior member of the squad.

“It’s the same. It has not changed over the last few years. I feel like I can bring something to the group, that doesn’t necessarily need to be with the jacket on, tossing the coin in the middle at the start of a Test," Head said.

“I am very comfortable with the fact that those two (Pat Cummins and Steve Smith) are doing extremely good job, and if I can bring anything to the team, I am more than happy to. I am not aspiring to be a leader in the team in terms of that something next to your name," he added.

As of now, it seems that Head is satisfied with his current role in Australian side and wants to lead the team with his big performances. It will be interesting to see, if Head can continue his impact with the bat in the coming future.
