ICC may allow head coaches to directly interact with players on the field during ODI drinks breaks.

New ODI rules could be implemented during India’s upcoming series against Afghanistan.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is gearing up to introduce some big changes in ODI format ahead of the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2027. These propsed rules will be discussed during a key meeting in Ahmedabad on May 30, and if gets approved, they could be implemented soon.

New rule for head coaches on the cards

In the T20 format, head coaches are often seen going into the field during drinks break to discuss plans with the players. However, such a rule is not currently in place in ODI cricket. At the present time, only substitute players are allowed to enter the ground during drink breaks in ODIs to convey the coach's message to the players, and they are required to wear full cricket gear.

Now, the ICC is considering to make a amendment in this rule. As per the proposal, similar to cricket, head coaches in ODI coaches would be allowed to enter the ground during drink breaks and speak directly with players. However, discussions will also take place about whether coaches should wear training gear or official team jerseys while stepping onto the ground.

Big decision likely in May 30 meeting

Other than the proposed rule involving head coaches, another suggestion has been made to start two official drink breaks in ODI cricket at intervals of 1 hour and 10 minutes. All these proposals were put on the table during the ICC Chief Executives Committee (CEC) virtual meeting. A final decision on these rules could be taken following discussions with all stakeholders during the meeting set to take place in Ahmedabad on May 30.

Team India's next assignment in ODIs

If the new rules get approval, they could first be implemented during the ODI series between India and Afghanistan, set to start in early June. Following the conclusion of the ongoing IPL 2026, the first ODI between India and Afghanistan will be played in Dharamshala on June 14.
