Cricketing legend Sunil Gavaskar advised Suryakumar Yadav to drop himself down the order, giving Tilak Verma a chance for some time at the crease and allowing Sanju Samson a bit of a hit as well in the Asia Cup 2025 clash against Oman and Pakistan.
Shubman Gill's inclusion in India's T20I squad as a vice-captain gave a new batting position to Sanju Samson at number five, and he is yet to bat in the mega event as India decided to chase in both their outings. Gavaskar believes that changing batting orders will help the batters to get some practice.
“I would like to think that India would consider batting first and keep the same opening pair. Maybe number three, Suryakumar Yadav, the skipper, could drop himself down the order, giving Tilak Verma a chance for some time at the crease and allowing Sanju Samson a bit of a hit as well," said Gavaskar on Sony Sports.
“This would give the batters some practice not just for the game against Pakistan, but also for the upcoming Super 4 matches against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. It’s more about preparing the batters than the bowlers," he added.
India's performance in the Asia Cup 2025
Suryakumar Yadav-led India are dominating in the Asia Cup. The Men in Blue faced the UAE in their tournament opener at Dubai International Stadium in Dubai, where defending champions defeated the hosts by nine wickets. After that, India faced Pakistan in their second Group Stage clash, defeating the side by seven wickets to seal their berth for the Asia Cup 2025 Super Four. Team India will face Oman in their third Group Stage clash, and the side will face Pakistan in a Super Four clash on September 21 at the same venue.
