Legendary India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar wasn't surprised at all with Shubman Gill making a return to the shortest format with Asia Cup 2025. At first, many were left surprised to see Gill get called back to the Men in Blue's T20I set-up, despite having not played in the format since July, 2024. Not just this, the 25-year-old has also been appointed as the side's vice-captain for the upcoming continental tournament.
Though there were a lot of doubts over Gill's participation in Asia Cup as he had just returned from the gruelling England tour, the selectors have decided to show faith in him and now it is up the 25-year-old to deliver with the bat in the upcoming tournament.
Gavaskar had no doubts over Gill's inclusion in India's squad for Asia Cup and remarked that the latter's stunning display with the bat in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy pretty much sealed his place in the Men in Blue's T20I set-up.
“Looking at the way he batted in this T20 format in the IPL, it was a no-brainer. He has been very successful in the T20 format for the IPL so there is no question that he has got the capability of doing well in T20. In the kind of form that he is in where he has scored more than 750 runs in the just concluded Test series, that really augurs well even for the T20 tournament," Gavaskar said in a group interaction on Sony Sports Network.
Gavaskar predicts India to win all their matches
Meanwhile, Gavaskar believes that India should win all their matches comfortably in Asia Cup. He even went on to add that it will be a 'bit of a surprise' if the Men in Blue do end up losing a match in the tournament.
“I really will be surprised if India don’t win their matches comfortably. All their matches, not just against Pakistan, but even against Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka. If they don’t win comfortably, it will be a bit of a surprise. Because the Indian team really has, over the last couple of years, been a really superb team, in great touch and great form," Gavaskar stated.
On the other hand, India will begin their Asia Cup campaign with the clash against UAE on September 10 before locking horns against arch-rivals Pakistan on September 14. Their group stage will come to a conclusion with the match against Oman on Seotember 19.
