Australia become World no.1 in ODI rankings after beating India 2-1 in three-match series

Australia dislodged India from the top of the ODI rankings to become new World no.1 after their 2-1 series victory over hosts in Chennai on Wednesday (March 22). After conceding the three-match series, India lost their dominance in the ODI rankings, albeit, both the teams are tied on 113 rating points. The Men in Blue also lost their maiden ODI series at home after March 2019 when they faced a 2-3 defeat to Australia.

Australia, who were trailing 0-1, made a stunning comeback to beat India in back-to-back matches to claim the series 2-1. Steve Smith-led side rocked India by 21 runs in the final ODI and halted Men in Blue's winning streak in bilateral series. The last time India lost a series at home was in 2018/19. It lost an ODI series 3-2 against Australia. Since then India registered six Test series wins, 14 T20I series and seven ODI series at home.


After losing the series, India went down to No.2 in the ICC ODI rankings, although they are tied on 113 rating points with the Aussies. The Men in Blue also lost their maiden ODI series at home after March 2019 when they faced a 2-3 defeat to Australia.

 

 

India claimed no.1 spot in ODI rankings back in January 2023 after routing New Zealand 3-0 at home. Subsequently, they trounced Sri Lanka 3-0 to continue their dominant run. 

 

Talking about the match, Australia, who won the toss and opted to bat, posted 269 runs in 49 overs. Hardik Pandya and Kuldeep Yadav led India's attack and scalped three wickets each. India in response got off to a strong start as Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill added 65 runs for the opening wicket. Virat Kohli scored a half-century, while Hardik Pandya played a fighting run a ball 40. However, wickets at regular intervals kept Australia in the contest. Adam Zampa scalped four wickets in his quota, while Ashton Agar scalped two, both came in his final over to finally rock India by 21 runs.
