West Indies batter Andre Fletcher was stretched off to hospital after he was hit by a ball on his neck in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). Playing for Khulna Tigers, the incident took place which left everyone shell-shocked but the management of the team has come out and stated that the player is safe and doing good. The 34-year-old was rushed to the hospital with immediate effect.
Timeline of the incident
The incident occurred in the seventh over of the Khulna Tigers innings when Fletcher was batting on 16 off 11 deliveries after hitting one boundary and a six. Rejaur Rahman Raja, on debut, was tasked to bowl and his short delivery was miss-hit by Fletcher, in an attempt to play a pull shot. Fletcher completely missed the ball and it resulted in the tragic incident.
After collapsing on the pitch, he was seen in excruciating pain. He was immediately attended by the medical staff and physios. He was straightaway stretched off to the hospital and was replaced by concussion substitute Sikandar Raza.
"He appeared to be okay”, said the BCB physician after the incident.
"He is out of danger but we are taking him to hospital as part of precaution.
“Fletcher is doing well. He is also in his senses, and not feeling any problems. But since he was hit on the neck, we are being cautious and not taking any risks. If the doctor advises for a scan then it will be done. At the moment it’s fine,” Khulna Tigers manager Nafees Iqbal said after the match. in an interview with Dhaka Tribune.
Khulna concede defeat
The incident did have bearings on the outcome of the contest as Khulna Tigers lost the match by 25 runs with Rejaur Raja ending with best figures of 20/2. The win sees Chattogram Challengers go top of the standings with two wins and a defeat while Khulna Tigers remain at fourth spot with one win and a defeat.
The incident brought back the memories of Philip Hughes’ tragic death after he was hit on the back of the head by a short delivery back in November 2014 in a Sheffield Shield encounter in Australia.
