In a bold call, Jos Buttler has stepped down as England's white-ball captain following team's early elimination from Champions Trophy 2025. England was knocked out from the Champions Trophy after suffering an eight-wicket defeat against Afghanistan. However, Buttler will lead England one last time in their last group-stage match against South Africa on March 1, Saturday.
Ever since England's ouster from Champions Trophy, pressure had been mounting on Buttler. The seasoned batter didn't enjoy a good runs England's captain since team's title triumph in T20 World Cup 2022. In their last 21 ODIs, England lost 15 matches. The most recent defeats came in the Champions Trophy, where they suffered losses against Australia and Afghanistan in their first two matches.

England's Champions Trophy campaign has taken a dire turn, marked by consecutive defeats. Following an initial loss to Australia in their group opener, Jos Buttler's team suffered a stunning upset against Afghanistan in Lahore. Despite Afghanistan posting a formidable 325 runs, largely driven by Ibrahim Zadran's impressive 177, England fell just eight runs short. This defeat signifies England's seventh consecutive loss under Buttler's captaincy, a streak that began during their recent tour of India, where they were swept 3-0 in the ODI series and lost the preceding T20I series 4-1.
Buttler's ascent to full-time white-ball captaincy, following Eoin Morgan's retirement, initially saw remarkable success with the T20 World Cup 2022 victory in Australia. However, the Champions Trophy represents the third consecutive ICC tournament in which England has failed to advance to the knockout stage. In his 43 ODIs as captain, Buttler has secured 18 wins against 25 losses. In T20Is, where he has captained 51 matches, second only to Morgan's 72, he has achieved 26 wins and 22 losses.
