The Indian team management has a great headache ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. India's pace-bowling spearhead Jasprit Bumrah is yet to regain fitness. Even an official word from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) medical team is awaited. The pacer is facing a race against time to be match-ready before the Champions Trophy 2025.
The selectors can make changes to the team till February 11. A few weeks ahead of the major tournament, a TOI report says that the BCCI medical team is currently in conversation with a New Zealand-based orthopedic surgeon Dr Rowan Schouten. The BCCI medical team will send a report to Schouten and he will give share his feedback. However, it will be a miracle if Bumrah is back up and running before the Champions Trophy 2025. There is a possibility that he may travel to New Zealand for further treatement.
“The reports will be shared with his doctor in New Zealand. Sending Bumrah to New Zealand will depend on the feedback. The board and Bumrah himself are not willing to push hard given his significance over a long period of time,” the source told the leading English daily.
“The selectors will only be informed if he is ready to take the field after the entire process is complete. The selectors will need to keep a backup plan ready for him. It will be a miracle if Bumrah makes it."
No Bumrah in first two ODIs against England
Earlier this month, chief selector Ajit Agarkar announced the squad for the ODI series against England and the Champions Trophy 2025. He said that Bumrah will miss the first two ODIs against England. The third and final ODI of the series will be played on February 12, a day after the deadline to make changes to the Champions Trophy squad.
Who will make it to the squad if Bumrah doesn't recover in time?
In Bumrah's absence, young Harshit Rana who is yet to make his ODI debut was added to the squad. Rana is yet to play white-ball cricket for India. Meanwhile, the selectors might fall back on the experience of Mohammed Siraj who was dropped from the squad. In-form left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh who dazzled in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25 was picked ahead of Siraj.
