India will play their Champions Trophy 2025 opener clash against Bangladesh.

Sunil Gavaskar picked Yashasvi Jaiswal over Shubman Gill as India's opener for CT.

Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar chose Yashasvi Jaiswal over Shubman Gill as the opener for the Rohit Sharma-led side for the Champions Trophy 2025 which is scheduled to start from February 19. Jaiswal who is currently in great form recently featured in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 where he scored 391 runs which is the highest by any India batter in the recently concluded series but is yet to make his ODI debut.

Gavaskar further explained that he is going for Jaiswal mainly because of the left-right combination that would then be in place at the top of the order for India.

"Who wants to be an Indian selector. For me, the left-handed Yashasvi Jaiswal because he brings that left-handedness. One of the biggest plusses or minuses, depending on which way you look at it, is the fact that there will be white balls," said Gavaskar on Star Sports.

"So what is a great delivery for a right-hander becomes a wide down the leg side for a left-hander, which means an extra run and an extra ball. So that left and right-hand combination even in the middle, with Rishabh Pant around, all these things will make a big difference," Gavaskar elaborated.

If this is to happen then the selectors need to give a chance to Jaiswal in the upcoming three-match ODI series against England which will be India's last assignment before the Champions Trophy. On the other hand, Gill is India's one of the consistent batters in ODI cricket. He scored 2328 runs in 47 ODIs at an average of 58.20 with six centuries and 13 half-centuries.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) yet to announce India's squad for the Champions Trophy where Rohit Sharma-led side will play their opener clash against Bangladesh on February 20. India's all group stage matches of Champions Trophy will be played in Dubai.
