Australia's stand-in captain Steve Smith has announced his retirement from ODI cricket after the team's four-wicket loss to India in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 semifinal clash at the Dubai International Stadium in Dubai. The batter will feature in T20Is and Tests. 

Smith, who was appointed as Australia captain for the Champions Trophy in the absence of the injured Pat Cummins, took to his Instagram to announce retirement from One-day cricket. 
 

"It’s time to close the chapter on my ODI career. It’s been such a pleasure wearing the canary yellow and super proud to have been part of 2 World Cup winning teams along the way. Thanks to everyone for all of the support, It’s been one hell of a ride" Smith wrote on Instagram. 

Reflecting on his decision, Smith said it was the right time to step aside as Australia builds itself for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

"It has been a great ride, and I have loved every minute of it," Smith said.

 

"There have been so many amazing times and wonderful memories. Winning two World Cups was a great highlight along with the many fantastic team-mates who shared the journey," he added in a media release shared by Cricket Australia.

Steve Smith ODI career

Smith, who made his ODI debut in February 2010 against West Indies as a spin-bowling all-rounder, has played 170 ODIs and scored 5,800 runs from 154 innings at an average of 43.28, including 12 centuries and 35 half-centuries. In his debut match, He picked up two wickets and conceded 78 runs from 9.5 overs as Australia won by 125 runs at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). 

Smith was the key member of Australia's 2015 and 2023 ICC World Cup-winning teams. He was named Australia’s men's ODI Player of the Year in 2015 and 2021 and earned a place in the ICC men's ODI Team of the Year in 2015.
