The medal rush at the ongoing Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022 continued for India as the Day 5 saw an addition of four more metals to India's medal tally. India sit sixth in the overall medal's tally with 13 medals, 5 golds, 5 silvers and 4 bronze medals.

 

It all started with the historical gold by women's lawn bowls team who bagged country's first-ever medal in the sport by emerging victorious in the 'fours' final. The quartet of Lovely Choubey, Rupa Rani Tirkey, Pinki and Nayanmoni Saikia made history as they recovered after trailing in the title to triumph against South Africa with a scoreline of 17-10.

 

Subsequently, India's men's table tennis team got the better of Singapore in the summit clash to earn fifth gold medal for the nation.

Moments later, Vikas Thakur added another medal in India's medal tally by clinching silver in men's 96 kg weightlifting.

Later, in the night the mixed badminton team lost to Malaysia to settle for silver medal.

 

Meanwhile, in squash, Saurav Ghosal lost to New Zealand's Paul Coll in the men's singles semi-final. India sit sixth in the overall medal's tally with 13 medals -- 5 golds, 5 silvers and 4 bronze medals.

 

India was expecting at least a medal from the women’s discus throw, but both Seema Punia and Navjeet Kaur Dhillon failed to impress. The women's hockey team also suffered a 1-3 defeat against England in a Pool A match. Muhammad Anees Yahiya and Murali Sreeshankar (men’s long jump), Tejaswini Shakar (men's high jump) and Manpreet Kaur (women’s shot put) qualified for the finals. Dutee Chand, however, failed to make the women’s 100m final. Squash star Saurav Ghosal too lost his men's singles semi-final. In boxing, Rohit Tokas defeated Ghana’s Alfred Kotey in the men’s welterweight division to enter quarters.

Manpreet Kaur In Women's Shot Put Final

Good news for Manpreet Kaur in women's shot put. The Indian has qualified for the final with a best effort of 16.78m.

 

Murali Sreeshankar In Men's Long Jump Final

India's Murali Sreeshankar has qualified for the final in men's long jump with 8.05m in the qualifying round. He still has two attempts left. The qualification rules says - Qualifying performance 8.00m (Q) or at least 12 best performers (q) advance to the final. In another good news, Muhammed Anees Yahiya has also qualified for the men's long jump final with a best leap of 7.68m. He joins Murali Sreeshankar in the summit clash.

Swimming

Indian swimmers Advait Page and Kushagra Rawat qualified for the final of the men's 1500m freestyle after finishing fourth in their respective heats. But Srihari Nataraj, who bettered the best Indian time en route a third place finish in heat 2, could not qualify for the final of the men's 200m backstroke event.
