England's 35-year-old pacer Mark Wood does not want players to dwell on the series loss to India ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Ahead of the third and final ODI of the series at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on February 12, Wood said tournament cricket is different to bilateral series.
"It's very easy to look at this and say we're not performing well because we're losing games but the 2019 World Cup-winning team, we didn't win very much here. This is as tough as it comes to win away," Wood said responding to the criticism around England's white-ball cricket.
"We've lost this series but when we get to the Champions Trophy, this cannot linger on us. We've got to get used to tournament cricket, it's a totally different feeling, don't carry any baggage from here."
Wood pointed out that the Test team is in a difference place when compared to the ODI side. He asked for some patience as Brendon McCullum has just taken over as head coach of the white-ball time.
"I remember when he first came into the Test stuff, the things he was saying – it's trying to get this group on board with that," said the express pacer.
"We've got two or three guys who have played a lot then we've got guys that are just starting under a new coach. It takes time. The Test team was in a very different place to the one-day team."
Duckett's tall claim after series defeat
Earlier, Ben Duckett had also said that this England team does not care about the result of the bilateral series as long as they win the Champions Trophy 2025 final.
"We have come here for one thing and that is to win the Champions Trophy. If we lose 3-0 to India, I don't care as long as we beat them in the final of the Champions Trophy. It's about peaking at the right time. We've been close against India and been nowhere near our best. We will always take positives," Duckett told Sky Sports after the four-wicket defeat at Barabadi Stadium, Cuttack.
Meanwhile, England have lost the services of 21-year-old all-rounder Jacob Bethell. He has been replaced by Tom Banton for the third ODI and likely to be part of England's Champions Trophy squad as well.
